The Story of Washi: Japan’s 1400-Year-Old Handcrafted Paper

The Story of Washi: Japan’s 1400-Year-Old Handcrafted Paper

Washi is a traditional Japanese paper that has been made in Japan since ancient times, with a history dating back more than 1,400 years. Unlike the paper commonly used today, each sheet is carefully handcrafted. Its raw materials differ from those of ordinary paper made from wood pulp, instead being made of special plant fibers such as kozo, mitsumata, and warabi. Because these plants contain very little acid, washi is resistant to deterioration over time.

Thanks to its unique manufacturing process, washi is thin yet strong and flexible, and in Japan it has been used not only for traditional crafts but also for the preservation and restoration of cultural heritage. Today, washi is also widely used in practical applications such as interior materials, packaging, and displays.

At our store, we offer a modest selection of small items made with washi, as well as Yuzen washi featuring beautiful patterns, so that you can experience the charm of washi firsthand. We invite you to enjoy the unique texture and beauty of washi as it blends naturally into your everyday life.
